Changes to Pitcairn Island Government

Wednesday 15th August  A process is now underway to restructure the way the Pitcairn Island Government operates. The foundation of the new structure is based upon  a British White Paper published in March of 1999.

According to the White Paper, British Overseas Territories (BOT) will work,  in partnership with the UK Government,  to bring its own Governments up to internationally recognized standards and will respect the rights of BOT's under the UN charter article 73

The partnership between Britain and the BOT's is based upon four underlying  principles:

- The right to self-determination

- Mutual responsibilities for both sides

- The right of the people of the BOT's to exercise the greatest possible control over their own lives

- Britain will continue to provide help to those BOT's that need it.

The British Overseas Territories comprise Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, the Pitcairn Islands, St Helena and its dependencies Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, and the Turks and Caicos Islands; the territories of the British Antarctic Territory, the British Indian Ocean Territory and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands,  and the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus.

The proposed new changes to the Pitcairn Island Government is contained in a draft document which can be downloaded on this website. The document was read in at least one Council meeting and suggestions were considered and the document was amended accordingly in at least one other Council meeting. A workshop, open to the public,  was held last week in which a PowerPoint  presentation (also available for downloading from this website) was held. Another open  workshop is planned for this Sunday.

An open workshop was held last month to consider the Human Rights aspect of this document. (Click here to read story).
